Hospice and Forever Fosters

Sometimes we take in animals that will never be adopted out due to health or behavioral issues.  You may wonder why we would take in animals like this.  We are a rescue and believe every animal should have the opportunity to live in a safe and loving environment no matter what their condition is.  Many of these animals require extensive veterinary care.   These pets are living with foster families. They are cared for and  loved very much. Some of these animal stay for many years.  Some, sadly, are only with us for a shorter time.   Below are the animals that are currently in our hospice/forever foster program.  You will find their story along with the picture.

GREAT NEWS!!! - Dax's cancerous tumors have been removed and he is now cancer free!!!!!

Dax came to TAAR from an unfortunate situation.  He, his sister and their family were living in their car. They wanted better for their dogs so they sent them to us.  He was full of fleas and worms.  The skin on his underside was peeling.  He was very dirty.  He was given flea and worm treatment, a bath and taken to the vet for vaccinations and a good check up.  At his first check up the vet found a tumor in Dax and it turned out to be cancerous. This saddened all of us greatly.  Taking in a dog and having such high hopes of finding a great new family for him and then finding out he has a terminal condition.   Dax still lives with his foster family where he is loved and spoiled very much.   We have vowed to make his days the best we can.

Madelyn came to us from death row. Her shivering in the video the shelter posted online broke out hearts and we knew we had to get her. She appeared paralyzed in the video and had minimal use of her back legs when she came to us. After a visit to the vet it was determined that the cause of this was that she had a bladder infection that had been left untreated long enough it caused paralysis. Luckily, the damage has been somewhat reversible and she can walk and even trot now (she is 15 years old after all!). She LOVES her foster dad, hair dryers after a bath, and barking at the other dogs when they are eating (even if she doesn't want it). She's been with us a few months now and shows no signs of slowing down! She has a monthly sponsor that sends $100/month for her !(and other seniors in need)! Thank you!

Flip (gray with flipped ears) and Uncle (gray on right): Two of our old boys. Flip came to us as a stray that had been caught in Balaton, MN. His ears are mostly frozen off from his time as a stray. Uncle came to us from a farm when he was ill.

Mickey came to TAAR as an owner surrender 2 years ago. Mickey was a retired breeding dog and his years in a mill have taken a toll on him physically and mentally. When he first came here we couldn't touch him without him urinating/defecating all over himself. We tried working on leashing him (that was a BIG failure) and tried different techniques to socialize him. Ultimately what has worked is that we just let Mickey be himself! Gradually he got used to us being around and he seems to enjoy our company now (even though he's not sure if he likes being pet, he doesn't have accidents anymore when we pet him and he even closes his eyes and seems to enjoy being brushed or scratched behind the ears). He follows his foster dad around the yard and loves being around the other dogs. Progress is slow but we know he's happy now and that's all that matters! Mickey recently had a dental cleaning (his before pictures are on Facebook wall) because his teeth were so awful and hurting him. He had a few pulled and now they are pearly white

Speed Buggy  is one of the oldest and longest residents at 15 years old. She is very sweet and loves to ride on your shoulders whenever we let her (winter time it's allowed, summer not so much!)

Olive came to us from Ohio. She was on death row at an overcrowded shelter there and we decided we'd take her as a hospice case and let her live out her final days in peace. Well, she came to us as close to dead as we've ever seen a dog: could see every bone in her body and had horrible anemia from fleas and parasites. We found out she is diabetic and left untreated for so long that is what damaged her eyes beyond repair and caused her extreme weight loss. Conveniently her foster dad is also diabetic so she was in good hands for her recovery! Even though she is completely blind she has recovered (with daily insulin injections) and is doing amazingly well. She loves to hang out with the big dogs and considers it her duty to patrol the cats at her foster home. She is such a funny and amazing dog. She would love sponsorship for her medications and food.

Shorty is one of our more difficult rescues. He had fallen in a sewer pipe in Balaton, MN and through some quick thinking was able to be rescued after he climbed 10 feet up a pipe wrapped in a sheet into the arms of his rescuer. He is about 1 year old and very smart and sweet. He would love a sponsor!

Dusk is a crazy and fun boy that came to us as a fall kitten last year. He has a horrible bladder infection and was just treated at Lakeside Companion Animal Clinic last week. He'd love a sponsor to help with those costs!

Rory and his brother Mac were found as kittens at the golf course with no mother in site. There was nowhere for them to go so they ended up here. They are the most loving and sweet boys. We'd love food sponsors or vaccine sponsors for him and his brother!!

Fritz came to us from a Mankato rescue due to being too feisty to be adopted. He did not do well in a home environment and would bite adopters. Fortunately, he has thrived as an outdoor cat and we see only mostly good behavior from him! His back story is that his owner was in the military and brought him all the way back from Germany. Sadly, he was surrendered due to his behavioral issues after arriving stateside. He's doing great here and loves to sit on our laps and especially enjoys campfires.

Little Cuteness is very sweet and gentle cat. She is somewhat timid and prefers to relax in the woods now that it's nice out. She came to us as an "teen" kitten that was never adopted.

Lovey is an orphan female kitten that has been with us for almost a year. She is super sweet and loving. She'd love to be a housecat!

These are some sanctuary cats. They were rescued as kittens and too shy for adoption.
